Imphal, November 14:
The Manipur State Cooperative Union and the Institute of Cooperative Management, Lamphel jointly observed the Empowerment of Women, Youth and Weaker Section Day today with a function at the institute premises.
The occasion also marked the 48th All India Cooperative Week celebrations.
RK Mukhrasana, chairperson of the Citizen Volunteer Training Centre who was the chief guest at the function, emphasized upon the role of women in cooperatives and observed that in the early 50s and 60s the cooperative movement was much stronger and effective but it has been declining since.
Ex-Speaker Dr S Dhananjoy, who presided, observed that women's empowerment would be achieved through political empowerment.
Reservation of seats for women in the Assembly, and in Parliament could enable empowerment, he said.
He further observed that leadership is what women need to improve their lot.
